I am Katt Marshall, a creative of many focuses that clash, intertwine, and envelope my attention. I grew up between the eclectic crayon lines of kitsch-style pink flamingos and the grand hierarchy of ecclesiastic glass windows. Whimsy and purposeful enchantment are the dichotomy that blooms within my creative spirit. I follow in my family’s atypical art passions by mirroring my Mom’s stained glass footsteps while also exploring my own creative curiosities in ceramics and communication design.
I focus on the copper foil method of stained glass, reminiscent of the 19th-century stained glass artist Louis Comfort Tiffany. This technique and mentality allow the materials to evoke meaning. My designs begin as computer-generated line art, which I purposefully translate with glass. The use of color and texture narrates the metal alloy framework, enrobing it in evocative shapes of movement and depth. My scale ranges from large architectural windows to small hanging ornaments.
I choose to identify my work as “art glass,” as the vernacular “stained glass” harks to the process and not the actual form. My subject matter explores my relationship with the world around me. It leads to a platform for reflection on equality, femininity, sustainability and pays homage to the natural world. My devotion to thematic contemplation occasionally whacks my funny bone, appearing in my ceramic creations.
Currently using stoneware or porcelain clay bodies, this medium enables playfulness in my work. My purpose ranges from humor in everyday life to interpreting the inexplicable human condition and its complexities. Without explanation, the viewer may not realize the work’s intent but can intuit their own meaning. Furthermore, my communication and graphic design work is the pragmatic undercurrent that supports my creative endeavors. Overall, my art is a visual serenade for my life path: integrity, reverence, tribulations, and a healthy dose of gut-busting laughter.
